FLORA TSANG - About

Flora Tsang is a contemporary artist based in Hong Kong whose works focus on the poetic expression of nocturnal scenes. She graduated with a BA (Hons) in Environment and Interior Design from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2021.

Through her professional interior design practice, she observed the profound impact of artificial lighting on spatial experience, inspiring a passion to translate those subtle light effects into an art form through painting.

Drawing from her background, she is deeply invested in exploring the emotional resonance of light, shadow, and architectural form.

My painting explores the relationship between artificial lighting during the evening, in relation to the architecture and human perspective.

As a night person, my inspiration and energy peak after dark.

The subtle light variations tell stories of a city’s nocturnal life. While people are often captivated by grand nightscapes from the peaks or skyscrapers, I am drawn to the quiet, fleeting moments that are only noticed and appreciated by those who truly look.

Inspired by Italo Calvino ‘s postmodern approach to depicting city through time, memory, culture and personal experience, I examine the scales, texture and layouts of the light. I focus on how its interaction with the environment triggers my own emotional connection to the city.
